Supporting Growth: Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Community
Social Emotional Learning
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions (CASEL, 2022).
The benefits of social and emotional learning (SEL) are well-researched, with evidence demonstrating that an education that promotes SEL yields positive results for students, adults, and communities.
What does it look like?
Learning strategies and practicing the 5 core SEL competencies; Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making. This work is woven through academic lessons and practiced on a regular basis.
Community
We build a Learning Community by working as a team. The tutor works with the student to create an academic goal and this is shared with family and teachers. Clear and open communication is the best way to support and meet student needs. Resources and support will be provided so the teacher and family can support the student on a regular basis.
